Summary: Together the Seigaku tennis team lived over five hundred years.

Quite different from the usual Prince of Tennis fics out there, this one is a collection of short snippets on how each of the Seigaku regulars died. All of them are impacting in their own way - some quite sad, others play off of each other. What I love about it is also how a lot of these snippets actually tell a larger story without ever coming right out to say it clearly - but it leaves you thinking about it even after you're done reading. It's one of those stories that felt sadder in hindsight than while reading, I think. ;_;

Summary: In the event of finding fictional characters from popular children’s fantasy novels in your team locker room, Kaidoh decides, not knowing that you could speak a different language kinda sucks.

All I need to say is Kaidou goes "Fshuu" and Harry understands, because, well, it's kinda parseltongue, isn't it? Except Kaidou, poor guy, doesn't realize at all what he's been saying. Hilarity ensues. Best crossover crack in the world. XD

Characters: Ooishi/Kikumaru
Length/Type: One-shot (approx. 1200 words)

Summary: Eiji doesn't have Oishi's patience.

This particular fic uses a pretty common GP plot-device, but what makes it stand out for me is the way the author approaches the characterization. It isn't a long piece by any means, but it manages to touch upon some very essential aspect of GP and the roles Ooishi and Kikumaru have in each other's lives. I especially like their reactions to each other, as well as their interaction with each other.

Truth is - I love Golden Pair, but for various reasons, I don't often find myself being satisfied with a lot of GP fics I come across - which is likely due to the fact that I seem to be in the minority as to how I view GP, and by extension, Kikumaru and Ooishi as individuals. The author herself states "This is how I see Eiji - there is no weepy uke here." - and, well, I guess what I'm trying to say is, I quite like her Eiji (and her Ooishi too).

Summary: Sometimes you don't appreciate the value of what you've got, until you don't have it any more.

I discovered Miko's fics rather late, which could be a good thing because it came at a time when I felt like I had burned through all the good Silver Pair fics in existence and needed MOAR. And boy did she provide it. To date, this particular fic may be the ultimate one that put me through some very major Silver Pair emotional wringer. It yanked me across pretty much the entire range of oh my gods, oh noes, and oh yesses. I can't even begin to describe the hurt and the squee I felt through various stages of the story. It was just one big intense reading fest for me, leading right up to the feeling of bliss and satisfaction at the ending.

Emotional wringing aside, I especially like how human she made Shishido and Ootori in this - and how she covers the dynamics (and hardships) of their friendship/relationship in all aspects (from personal to tennis partners) and to discovering one's feelings (not a light thing). It also feels believable the way she told it, which is probably why it managed to throw me into fits of OMG - which are all marks of good storytelling, me thinks.

Characters: Shishido Ryou, Ootori Choutarou, Shishido/Ootori, Hyoutei
Length/Type: Multi-chapter (2 parts, approx. 12,780 words), may actually be considered as Gen

Summary: When Shishido Ryou loses his regular spot on the tennis team, he turns to Ohtori Choutarou for help. This is where they started, but not where they will end.

To quote the author, "This is the Silver Pair when they weren't the Silver Pair. This is them when they were Shishido Ryou and Ohtori Choutarou." And she does it so wonderfully. ;_; I love well-done "behind the scenes" type of fics, the ones that show all the missing scenes and thoughts that go into making something we mostly only see the result of in canon. Here, we get to watch Shishido's journey from his fall from the Hyoutei regulars to how he climbs back up. Not only does it cover how his friendship with Choutarou was built, but it also goes into other details that are often taken for granted, like how he ends up playing Taki in an attempt to win his spot back, etc.

This is Silver Pair at its best when they were still just teammates and how their friendship grew from Shishido's ordeal. A huge part of what makes the fic great is her Shishido - she writes him so very well. And, also, the way her Shishido sees Choutarou. *loves*

Summary: First loves are notoriously difficult. For Shishido Ryou, it is the end of the world.

When I think of Shishido/Ootori, I automatically think of [livejournal.com profile] everlind first - because she, more than anyone else in my mind, was the author that established (and then defined) my Silver Pair love. Hers weren't the first Silver Pair fics I had read, but they were the ones that made me really really fall in love with the pair. To date, even after all the numerous Silver Pair fics I've read, this specific one still stands as one of my top favorites, especially in the "discovering love" or "get-together" genre.

It has everything I could possibly hope for - boy angst, friendship, awkwardness, first loves, boy hormones, good characterization, the right dose of fluff, and awesome Hyoutei regulars with more of a role than just background noise.

Characters: Choutarou's father, Ootori Choutarou, Shishido/Ootori, Hyotei regulars
Length/Type: One-shot (approx. 4700 words), 2nd person POV

Summary: Ootori Choutarou, as seen through the eyes of his father.

Reccing a Hikago father's POV fic yesterday reminded me that this one needed to be added here ASAP. Bunseki is written from Choutarou's dad's point of view but uses the 2nd person narrative to do this (and the author uses it very well indeed). The narrative gives the story an intimate quality that I can't explain. The voice, the flow, the different things that happen - it's like you're right up there with them, with Choutarou's father, seeing everything he sees - and man, what a great eye he has.

There's more than just Choutarou here though - there's also Hyotei, the regulars, and Shishido... and Choutarou and Shishido, together. It seems like such a simple, quiet observational piece, but there's also something about it that resonates with my inner fangirl, the kind that reminds me, "This is why you ship them."

Author's Summary: In his third year of high school, they stopped calling him a genius.

Simple, poignant. Fuji, here, is oh so painful to read. I especially like the way the author manages to evoke this feeling without ever shoving it in your face - you know, the kind where the author doesn't have to tell you how to feel because the story itself does it so well. Part of it, I think, is also because I can totally imagine the possibilities of things turning out this way... and it just makes me go, Oh, Fuji.
