Community description:A fanwork recs journal. Mainly fanfics, with the occasional fanart and other fandom work.
A fanwork recs journal of [personal profile] graychalk, partially created to serve as my personal bookmarks of goodies. Mainly for fanfics, with the occasional master list or newsletter type of thing for fanart and other stuff made for fandom.

Started: February 2012 - If you've been in fandom for a long time and have already read most of the good ones, a lot of recs for now will seem pretty old. This is because I'm also moving recs I've made at my old websites (plus various other communities online) bits at a time, going through some of my favorites, and clearing up some old bookmarks as well.

Tags are your best bet in finding something. The memories, on the other hand, are usually used for stuff I'm leaving aside or just keeping track of for the moment.

I've always liked browsing through people's favorites, bookmarks, memories, and rec journals. Without them, I probably would have never found some of the awesome fandom stuff that I hold so dear now. Sometimes I do venture into the open and wade through loads of stuff in search of the next good thing to read or see. And, well, I'm sure we all know how trying that can be. Other times, it's luck, which is always a happy surprise.

This is, I suppose, my way of sharing the things I've found and liked - some of them are truly exceptional, while others may simply be a really enjoyable piece of work that my inner fangirl couldn't help but love (sometimes even at the expense of "quality"). To me, recs are pretty much a personal thing. But perhaps someone will come along one day and discover something they really like too. I certainly hope so. :)

My rec policy:

I tend to rec things that catch my attention in some way, and I usually say why in my rec posts. In fact, I'd probably be babbling quite a bit (and I always welcome reply-babbles) as I tend to do with things I like. If I made no comments about the fic, it's likely because it's a very old favorite I'm positive about reccing but not confident enough to pick out specifics anymore - but I would eventually return to add something in when I get around to re-reading it.

It's probably obvious by now, but this isn't the type of place where I insist on setting super high standards, reccing only the best of the best or anything like that - because, really, what is the best of the best?

I do generally have very little tolerance for poor character portrayal/development and badly executed fics in regards to grammar/spelling. However, I find that I'm sometimes more forgiving with the latter in short pieces if I happen to really love the idea. Similarly, I also have to admit that I'm prone to being a bit less selective with smaller or obscure fandoms.

I don't pay attention to the date something is created, nor how popular it already is or isn't. In fact, I imagine there would be more "older" stuff simply because a lot of my favorites are old. I also prefer to read (and consequently, rec) completed fics, though this isn't absolute. Incomplete fics, if they get recced, will likely be done via a master list.

By default, I don't bother with spoiler warnings unless it's something very recent - like fics that are inspired by (then posted) soon after the latest story development, etc. However, I do often mention the timeline of a fic, which is usually a big clue as to whether it'll have spoilers for you. When in doubt, just ask.

My fandoms:

While my fandoms can vary in (sometimes) unexpected ways, anime and manga will likely always be prevalent, followed closely by Harry Potter. In terms of other books, movies, and TV - I'm all over the place for these, but I'm not heavily engrossed in any particular ones so recs for these may seem random at times. I do happen to be quite fond of older fandoms like My So-Called Life, The Breakfast Club, and Roswell, but I find it a bit harder to come across really good stuff for these.

My current top three fandom loves are Naruto, Prince of Tennis, and Harry Potter. I also read a lot of Hikaru no Go, but as this journal grows in size, I think browsing the tags and memories will give you a better idea of what to expect.

General fic preferences:

I love gen, and I read both het and slash, though less of the latter (in the general sense). What I mean is, I tend to be quite particular about slash and I don't actively seek it out in general, except for certain series and slash pairings that I already heavily ship (usually from Prince of Tennis and Hikaru no Go - in which case, I devour them quite obsessively). Because of this, I imagine there will always be more recs with a wider variety for het fics, than slash ones.

That said, I ship, sometimes fiercely, so my recs will reflect that. I'm a sucker for get-together fics, the slice of life, and good drama. On the other hand, I'm usually not a fan of pregnant or baby fics.

Romance and shippy stuff aside, I like a good action/adventure. Drama is also great, but only when it isn't being overly dramatic or being so just for the sake of. I have a bit of a soft spot for time travels, canon-verse AUs (well, maybe a lot of different types of AUs), and interesting crossovers.

Regardless of genre, I'm always partial to thought-provoking pieces, excellent character development, and intricate plot. I love epics and long stuff, but there are less of those (that are complete) than short ones, which means likely more recs for the shorter stuff. I do very much enjoy short scenes, character pieces, vignettes, and those "5 things" or "10 facts" type of fics as well.

If you loved something, try and let the author know too! (I'll always be glad to hear so as well.)

Happy Browsing / Reading! :D
